Rapsody Recalls JAY-Z Finally Responding To Her Email After Joining Roc Nation

Los Angeles, CA – Back in July of 2016, Rapsody signed to JAY-Z’s Roc Nation. While speaking with HipHopDX, Rapsody recalled JAY-Z’s late response to her first email after officially joining his team.

“He replied back like four months later,” Rapsody said while laughing. “It was when I first signed to Roc Nation and we finished the album [Laila’s Wisdom]. I sent him an early link to listen to it and download it. I wanted his ear, opinion, and I wanted to know what he thought.”

Although Jay wasn’t timely with his response, Rapsody knows that her boss believes in her ability to deliver. “It didn’t matter,” she said. “I knew how he felt. I was on Roc Nation. I knew he supported it and thought it was dope. When he replied back, months later, he told me how dope the project was.”

Speaking on the project further, Laila’s Wisdom was nominated for two Grammys including Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song for “Sassy.” In addition to that, the 14-track LP earned the No. 2 slot on HipHopDX’s Best Rap Albums of 2017 list and peaked at the 125th spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

Throughout her career, Raposdy has cited the Brooklyn MC as her inspiration. At one point during the interview, the Charlotte native spits Jay’s iconic lyrics from his hit single, “Takeover,” as a life lesson she’s learned.

“A wise man told me don’t argue with fools / ‘Cause people from a distance can’t tell who is who,” Rapsody said in reference to Jay’s track.
