Dr. Dre Helming Marvin Gaye Biopic

Los Angeles, CA – It appears that Marvin Gaye’s story will be fully realized on the big screen by a hood surgeon who knows a thing or two about blockbuster biopics.

Variety has discovered that Dr. Dre himself is taking the reins on a developing Marvin Gaye movie. Prior to this announcement, the likes of F. Gary Gray, Cameron Crowe, James Gandolfini, Scott Rudin, Jamie Foxx, Jesse L. Martin and Lenny Kravitz all failed in getting the family’s blessing.

The Chronic Doctor has also reportedly secured the rights to use Gaye’s music, which has its songwriting credits owned by Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

Alongside Gray and his former N.W.A running partner Ice Cube, the 53-year-old Dre helped propel 2015’s Straight Outta Compton past $200 million at the global box office and even earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in the process.

With Dre now manning a Marvin Gaye biopic that is inevitably going to see the light of day, a twist of irony has been discovered. The legendary hitmaker is represented by King, Holmes, Paterno & Soriano, the exact same legal firm that defended Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams against the Gaye estate in 2015’s highly controversial “Blurred Lines” lawsuit; the one that took ownership to a “style and feel.”

And that’s what’s going on for now.
