Freddie Gibbs & Madlib Recruit El Michels Affair For NPR Tiny Desk Concert

New York, NY – Freddie Gibbs and Madlib recently stopped by NPR’s New York City offices for the Tiny Desk Concert series.

It would’ve happened months ago, but Madlib was adamant about having El Michels Affair as their backing band. Evidently, the timing was finally right and the jazz-funk hybrid was able to go along for the ride.

With the help of the talented Marco Benevento, Dave Guy and El Michels Affair members Leon Michels, Homer Steinweiss and Nick Movshon, Madlib and Gibbs delivered the Bandana cuts “Education,” “Gat Damn,” “Soul Right” and “Freestyle Shit.”

For his part, Madlib brought a small thunder tube and vintage electric bongos circa 1960, adding additional layers to already robust sounds emanating from the band. Meanwhile, Gibbs rocked an open Stüssy jacket with a giant “G” chain hanging from his neck while delivering his verses.

Bandana, which received a perfect 5.0 rating from HipHopDX, was released in June. Madlib recently announced the duo was crafting a follow-up, the tentatively titled Montana.

Until that surfaces, check out their performance up top.
