“I made a lot of music with Dr. Dre — like probably two albums worth,” he said. “And honestly, it’s like the music that I really like now. Oxnard was a beautiful place. I was doing a lot of rapping and growing up there, we were always running from security guards in the mall and slap-boxing and we wanted to be rappers and do a lot of stuff.

“We also went to church. I went to church a lot. And the town over — it’s a little more quiet, more peaceful. I got into trouble out there too, but it gave me a lot more character and soul, and I think I got a lot more soul music to present. It’s lots of soul, a bigger tour and the best teeth in the game!”

Paak signed to Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment imprint in 2016. His first album with the N.W.A legend was Oxnard, which was released last November. Working with Dre was something he never really saw happening.

“I thought it was a little far-fetched growing up,” he told Fallon. “Always used to listen to him. Snoop, Dre, Ice Cube — this is like a part of our musical DNA. Both of us are perfectionists so it’s really frustrating sometimes, the sessions.”

When asked if they butt heads, Paak said, “Absolutely. Yes, his head is bigger than mine, too. He’s bigger, so it’s like, ‘OK Dre. Sounds good to me.’ But we have the same tastes.”
