New York City, NY – A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie‘s latest album Hoodie SZN brought in over 83 million streams, making his sophomore effort the No. 1 album in the country as well as his first No. 1, even though the project only sold 823 albums.

The Bronx rhymer explains how this is even possible to TMZ as he was leaving Rockefeller Center Wednesday (January 17) evening.

“Streaming took over sales,” A Boogie says with a huge smile. “Anybody in this era right now is always going to do more streaming than sales. What I look at like? Fuck sales. We don’t even have any real CDs out.”

Prior to the release of Hoodie SZN, the “Drowning” rapper’s biggest release was his 2017 debut album The Bigger Artist which peaked on the Billboard 200 at No. 4.

Hoodie SZN is 20 track album with guest appearances from Juice WRLD, Tyga, Offset and fellow New York rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine on the London on da Track-produced cut “Swervin.” According to A Boogie, the video for “Swervin” has already been shot and 6ix9ine will be in it even though he is currently incarcerated.

Since the emergence of streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, it’s become easier for music fans to listen to their favorite artists as soon as their projects become available at the stroke of midnight.

This development has essentially relegated the once coveted (and expensive) compact disc nearly obsolete so it shouldn’t be surprising that more artists will begin to top the Billboard charts just off streams alone.
